Strike of oil resellers today in Warsaw

Polish Radio informs about strike of the resellers of the fuel oil distributed for the heating purposes. The strike is planned to take place in front of the Polish Parliament (in Warsaw) and relates to currently existing law causing distributors significant loses.  Today's strike will be attended by representatives of companies distributing fuels and their associates from all over Poland. They are planning to hand over the statement with their demands to Parliament’s speaker Ewa Kopacz.  Strike is planned to last the whole day, ending at 18:00


Current law defines two end purpose for selling oil, one for the firing the engines (commonly used fuel in the cars) and the oil sold for the heating purposes. The object of strike relates to the oil for heating purposes. According to the law, the taxation on the raw material is different, depending on its final usage. The entity that is selling “heating oil” is obliged to certify that the oil the buy from the provider (refinery) is going to be used for heating, in order to pay lower tax. Strikers express that this certification is very strictly checked and even the smallest error causes them to pay horrendous fines ( the amount mentioned  is equivalent of 30 margins generated by vendors).

Vice-President of the Coordinating Committee of Light Heating Oil Distributors Slawomir Szymankiewicz expressed that many businessmen who had to pay the penalty due to the mistake, lost their entire companies and personal savings and that the currently existing law (and the penalties established based upon it) are not commensurate towards the mistake.

Case has been submitted to the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights, but the proceedings may last for many years. Oil Sellers believe that the interpretation of the rules is wrong and express strong demand to change them.
