Hydropower in Poland

Despite the fact that hydropower is one of the oldest energy resources in Poland, it did not gain popularity. The landscape, irregular rains and high costs of investment caused other RES to be chosen over hydropower.

EWEA on wind energy market in Poland

In February 2013, EWEA( European Wind Energy Association issued a report called „Emerging European Wind Energy Markets”. The association is taking close look at the shape of wind energy market in Europe and tries to describe, as well as draw possible developments, of it in Central-Eastern Europe. The EWEA raised the topic of new EU member states to the observation, as they noticed high activity of the wind energy sector in those countries. The installed capacity of wind power in the new Member States of the European Union  increased from 208 MW in 2005 to 4 200 MW at the end of 2011 (giving an average annual increase of 665 MW). Part of the report that we are going to take a close look at is dedicated to wind energy in Poland.

Official statemet towards new CO2 reduction targets

Minister of Economy, Janusz Piechocinski
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Janusz PiechociƄski said that if European Commission will upheld proposal for reduction of CO2 by 40 %, on the EU summit next week, Poland will be forced to veto such proposal. Financial Times has already expressed its concerns in the article two days ago, but this is the first official statement on the matter, heard from the official.

Gas shale exploration in Poland under big quesition mark

Exploration of shale gas in Poland was supposed to give the country economic boost and independence from Russian gas. Unfortunately, it seems that this plan might not be possible to be fulfilled. Due to the long administrative procedures, as well as not satisfactory results after exploratory drillings, companies are resigning from the further assessment.

Poland might introduce system of licences for coal trading

In order to increase the level of competitiveness in Polish coal market, there have been intensive discussions over eventual restructuring of this sector. Parliamentary policy-making group, working on the project proposing amendments to current energy law, suggested implementation of system of licences on the sale and trading of coal. The system of licensing could prevent Polish coal market from being overflown with illegally imported coal, especially by low-quality coal from Russia.

Poland cannot afford further plans of reduction of CO2

"As a country, we are not ready to pursue further trials in reduction of CO2 level" – said Marcin Korolec, Polish vice-minister of environment  and the agent of government on the climate policy. The discussion came up during the meeting Visegrad Group and other countries that took place today (October 7,2014) in Bratislava, where the environmental ministers discussed eventul scenario for the development of new EU climate policy.

Poland's fears of electricity price increase

Minister Maciej Grabowski
New minister for environment, Maciej Grabowski, during interview with Polish Press Agency pointed out that “if complying with EU standards of lowering air pollution level will mean for Poland significant increase of energy price, it might be a reason for Poland to not follow EU’s environmental scheme”. The interview took place during European Forum of Innovative Ideas in Sopot and related to minister’s opinion on the upcoming EU’s energy summit.

Warmia and Mazury voivodeship faces many cancellations of investments in RES, due to the problems with connections to the national grid

Due to the difficulties associated with the connection to the national transmission lines many investment cancellations took on the territory of Warmia and Mazury voivodeship.  The region, which already has problems with energy security, might face difficulties with sustaining safe level of electricity if the management of this issue will not change.
