Shale Gas in Poland

No comments :
Thanks to the conference Shale Science, organized in Warsaw, we have an occassion to discuss the shale gas on Polish territory.

There has been a lot of movement associated with the discovery and potential exploitation of shale gas from the Polish territory. What is shale gas?

Shale gas is a natural gas occurring in underground deposits of sedimentary shale. The first attempts of shale gas production occurred in the late nineteenth century. Exploitation of this type is becoming increasingly important source of natural gas in the United States in the last decade. Spore gas resources that are waiting for exploitation in Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia. Among European countries, Poland is a pioneer in the field of exploration projects of this material.
(thank you Wikipedia!)

Following the example of the United States, Polish authorities wanted to develop export of shale gas as raw material as well as cover the domestic demand for gas (and partially, or fully, to become independent of the gas that has been imported so far). At the moment, prospecting leads only just PGNiG - According to the latest statement of work published by the Ministry carries out drilling Środowiska.Koncern Tępcz-1 Wejherowo license and concession Milo Kartuzy-Szemud.Według Ministry of Environment will soon begin drilling PGNiG, Lane Energy , Chevorn and San Leon.

Map presented below shows the area where the concession for the search and research of potential high quality shale gas has been bought (from Gazeta Wyborcza: http://bi.gazeta.pl/im/2/8838/m8838002.jpg). Blue colour signifies area described above.

DComing back to the topic of the Shale Science conference, there has been boiling discussion regarding the financial profit from eventual exploration of Polish shale gas. The final conclusion made by the participants was the medium/average quality of the gas what still can be described as financially profitable in exploitation.
The representative of Schlumberger, Richard E.Lewis presented the outcome of research activities from two exploration points: Syczyn and Berejow in Lubelszczyzna (southern east Poland). Trials taken from two described points are characterized by significantly lower content of total organic carbon  (TOC). Trials from Lubelszczyzna have 1,5 – 2 % of TOC, while American ones 3,3 – 3,5 % ( points Marcellus and Bernett). Still, these parameters should not be exclusively  decisive, one should take into account other factors such as , for example, gas layer thickness (which in described points is around 75 m – such thickness simplifies exploration).
