During the visit of Donald Tusk, Polish Prime Minister, in Madrid (Spain), he has received full support for the idea of the creation of energy union within countries of EU. Mariano Rajoy, PM of Spain, fully backed the project which bases on the idea of shared purchase and further distribution of energy sources of all EU members.

Mariano Rajoy presented his idea of using the Spain’s potential in the project, for example by using the gas storage they have, as well as LNG terminals which could significantly heighten up European energy security.

Donald Tusk is consistent with his plan of presenting the idea to the heads of the biggest European countries. He has already met with Francois Hollande, the president of France as well as with Angela Merkel and van Rompuy. The idea is in most supported, but in order to have the exact answer of the representatives of the countries, the exact plan (with the adjustments communicated at the stage of consultation) need to be drawn.
The main points of the idea of energy union suggested by Donald Tusk are:
  • United negotiation for the purchase of the energy resources with the suppliers located outside Europe
  • United mechanism of reaction in case of the lack of supply of the energy resources to one of the EU states
  • Financial support of the EU in creation of the energy infrastructure that enables easy and fast exchange of electricity and energy sources
  • Full usage of the fossil fuels that are located on the territory of the EU
