PGNiG plans to have 40 new drillings by the end of 2014 to explore new opportunities in shale gas
Regardless the skepticism on the
Polish shale gas and many companies deciding to quit research in that field,
Polish Gas and Oil (PGNiG) company continues to pursue the works. As onet.pl reports,
PGNiG plans to do 25 more drillings, closing 2014 with the total number of 40
drillings done.
"Drillings are planned to
allow to open a new, poorly known areas of exploration for unconventional shale
gas / oil and tight gas. (…)They are a challenging due to new geologic target
so far not recognized in the region and open up opportunities for new
perspectives in the future” – the group points out in the official statement.
The decision of pursuing explaratory
drillings gives the PGNiG quite an advantage on the market. Data published by the Ministry of Economy covering the years 2010-2013 illustrates the situation pretty
well. At the end of 2013, Poland
hasìd 51
exploratory wells in total. The first drilling for
natural gas from shale was made in Poland in
2010, having 3 wells at the end
of the year. In 2011, there were
12. 2012 was a breakthrough, having
total of 24 exploratory wells.
If one compares those numbers with the plan of
PGNiG for this year, it is very clear that the company is putting significant
effort to be the most powerful player in the exploration of shale gas in
Poland. In 2014 PGNiG will have comparable number of drillings as total in period 2010-2013.
