Leakage of mazut in Kozienice power plant
About 9 tons of mazut
(by-product of distillation of petroleum) leaked from the Kozienice power plant
( located in the centre of Poland) on July 16,2014. Efficiently carried out emergency
plan stopped the fuel from running out to Wisla, Polish biggest river. Power
Plant is located on the left bank of Wisla, 75 km south of Warsaw, Poland’s
capital. It is the largest domestic producer of electricity using its coal
production ( production capacity equal to 2880 MW).
As acknowledged in an interview with TVN 24 (
news television channel) Piotr Ludwiczak of Enea SA, the owner of the power
plant Kozienice, the leak was caused by the failure of the valve in the supply
of one black oil boiler. Fuel Oil is now in a closed vessel, a double baffle
secured.
Pawel Kowalski, the representative of fire brigade in Kozienice reported that the
majority of fuel oil has been captured by the firewall in power, but about 5
cubic meters of substances leaked into the river which is a trace amount and
was efficiently captured on the spot by the chemical emergency service.
Mazut is an oily liquid which is a remnant of distillation of low
quality petroleum. It is difficult to determine without the technical specification of
the power plant to what purpose was mazut dedicated for,
but most likely as a lubicant during startup of steam boilers
(Kozienice power plant is a combined cycle, coal + steam).
